Could magicJack be the Vonage and Skype killer?

Never pay a monthly phone bill again! Free local and long distance calling in the USA and CanadaAccording to Herb Greenberg from CNBC it just might be.

If consumers all vow to never pay a monthly phone bill again with magic Jack, Dan Barislow is definitely going one the richest men on the planet.

MagicJack is a private company which is offering free unlimited long distance phone calls for 19.95 per year. Now don’t doubt this private company, Magic Jack is definitely going to create some headaches with Vonage, Skype, and other VoIP services with this competitive pricing

Magic Jack is owned by Dan Barislow. Barislow has had a history of success with discount internet service in the past. Borislow also ran Tel-Save (now Talk America) in the 1990s. He was also represented as breeder of High Finance, eighth in the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Magic jack is a USB-based VoIP service (usb thumb drive) that allows you to make free unlimited long distance phone calls for 19.95 per year. Yes, that’s 19.95 per year! magicJack has been featured on CBS News, Fox news, c|net, and CNBC.

MagicJack’s CLEC partner company apparently called YMax Communications Corp has interconnect agreements with all the larger carriers, meaning it’s not about to be shut down like some other value-cost calling operations.

From news and blogs floating around the net, I’ve read SJ Labs, the company that creates the softphone software for Vonage and others have been interestingly bought out by YMax Communications Corp.

MagicJack is definitely a product and company to dig a little deeper. This just might be the Vonage and Skype Killer.

If Dan Barislow conducts his business in the manner that magicjack has treated me then he wont be in business long. On Monday May 26, 2008 I ordered two magicjacks. received the email that my order was received and being processed and that they would bill a $1.00 charge to the debit card that would verify the account. On Wednesday May 28 2008 we received a charge on our account for the total amount of $97.00. Normally this would not have been a big deal but after getting the e-mail I spent some money out of my account. this putting me overdrawn. you think “$97.00 put this fool overdrawn” Well I am disabled and my wife works as a cake decorator making $8.00 per hour. we have three children, just lost our home because of my disability and are living in a home that my father purchased just so that we would have a place to live. This being said a phone service that was only $40.00 per year was a God send to my family, the second unit I was giving to my father as there is not much I can do to repay his generosity.

I tried to contact magicjack and found that there is no phone number and that the only way that anyone could talk to someone was to do the live chat. The live chat people were tech support and could not help (I am wondering if they are not under contract instead of employees of magicjack). After explaining the situation to them and asking them for a telephone number to contact to try and fix the problem I was disconnected from the chat. I tried this approach twice.

At this point I don’t know what to do other than send the units back to them when they get here and not do business with them again. Thanks for listening bill@bcmill.net
